Maquoketa Area History

The first permanent European-American settlers arrived in the area in 1838, establishing a community along the banks of the Maquoketa River at the crossroads of the Davenport–Dubuque mail and stage route and a major east–west trail used by pioneers traveling west. The river provided valuable waterpower for operating early mills, helping support the settlement’s growth.

Originally named Springfield, the community was renamed Maquoketa in 1844 to avoid confusion with other towns of the same name. The new name comes from Native American words commonly interpreted to mean “Bear River,” “little bear,” or simply “bear,” depending on historical sources. Maquoketa was officially incorporated as a city in 1853.
